Ishikura bunching onion
Rooftop gardening
November 11, 2012
Last summer I grown some Ishikura bunching onion on my rooftop. I wanted to blanche it, so I sow the seeds in a tall pot, filled with only 10 cm of soil.
After about a month that the onions had sprouted I carefully added some more soil.
I added more soil at the end of summer, finally filling the pot.
I harvested the bunching onion last week, gently pulling out the onions with all their soil.
Then I removed all the soil, releasing the onions one by one.
I harvested one pound of blanched onions, many were big, with a diameter of 2 cm or more, others were less developed.
I cleaned and removed excess soil and roots. These are the smallest ones, that I used for a gratin.
For the onions gratin: arrange in a single layer in a baking dish and drizzle with a little olive oil and thyme.
Bake for 10-15 minutes until they are golden brown. They are a delicious side dish.
This harvest joins to Harvest Mondays.
